  • Sourcing

At each stage of its products' life cycles, Mustela strives to minimise the impact they have on the environment and to develop fair trade relations with its partners. Find out about our current initiatives and our commitments for the future in relation to the environment, people and society.

We pay the closest attention to how our raw materials are produced:

    - Whenever possible, we try to use raw materials that have been produced without damaging biodiversity or infringing the rights of local people. In Peru, for example, we give priority to avocados from valleys that are difficult to access. This way, we give a boost to the local economy and encourage the producers to stay on their land: indeed, in the absence of any regular purchases of their fruit, all too often their only solution is to leave the countryside for the larger towns and cities.

    - We incorporate sustainable development-related criteria into our invitations to  encourage our suppliers to take action to preserve biodiversity – without compromising ecosystems and local populations. In order to ensure that our requirements are being met, we carry out regular audits in the field

-Since December 2011,  Expanscience Laboratories has been a member of the UEBT (Union for Ethical Biotrade), an international non-profit organization that works to promote ethical practices in the supply of ingredients sourced from biodiversity. In order to join the UEBT,  Expanscience Laboratories had to prove its commitment in relation to a number of criteria. These include respect for biodiversity, human rights, traditional know-how, ethical business practices, the equitable sharing of income along the entire length of the supply chain, etc.

    - By 2015, 100% of our plant supply chains will have implemented CSR action plans.

  • Design

From the choice of ingredients right through to packaging, our products are designed to minimize the impact that they have on humankind and the environment:

    - We attribute equal importance to safety and effectiveness, striving whenever possible to use ingredients of natural origin derived from carefully selected plants. Mustela Bébé products, for example, contain 92% ingredients of natural origin on average.

    - Whenever natural products do not enable us to get our requirements met, we use synthetic ingredients, the vast majority of which are developed using processes that do not harm humankind or the environment.

    - We will not use a number of controversial ingredients or ingredients which have a negative impact on the environment: this means that all Mustela products are formulated without parabens, phenoxyethanol, phthalates or alcohol, etc.

    - In order to prevent pollution from rinse water, all of our liquid washing formulas are biodegradable (OCDE 302B standard).

    - We are committed to ensuring that by 2015, all new Mustela products will be eco-designed.

As far as our packaging is concerned, we are implementing an eco-design approach based on the 3Rs approach: reduce, reuse, and recycle This involves a number of initiatives:

    - Reduce

    - Superfluous packaging and pointless information leaflets about Mustela products have been removed and some plastic packaging has been made lighter. At the end of 2012, our usage of plastic had fallen by 22 t and we had saved 78 t of paper and cardboard. As a result of the new work we are doing on making bottles lighter, we should save 60 t of plastic in 2013.

    - Reuse

    - We only use paper and cardboard from forests that are sustainably managed and FSC or PEFC certified in order to make Mustela Bébé and Mustela Sun care brochures and packs.

    - Mustela cardboard packaging is all printed using vegetable oil-based inks.

    - Because we incorporate partially recycled plastic into the tubes and bottles of some of our products in the Mustela Bébé, STELATOPIA and STELAPROTECT ranges, we have succeeded in reducing or use of virgin plastic by 4.3 t.

    - Recycle:

    - 100 % of Mustela bottles are recyclable (according to French market recycling criteria). As a result, in 2012, 127 t of plastic were collected and recycled (source: Eco-packaging standards – January 2012 – model products sold)

And for a number of years now, we have been thinking about the eco-design of our promotional items in order to reduce the impact they have on humankind and environment.

  • Production

Expanscience Laboratories is stepping up its initiatives to reduce the environmental impact that the manufacture of its products has, and is ensuring that all of its staff are able to work in pleasant and environmentally-friendly working conditions:

    - The company has implemented an environmental management system at its production and R&D site in Epernon and is ISO 14001 certified. Based on the principle of continuous improvement, this international reference framework sets out to manage and gradually reduce the impact that a company's activities have on the environment.

    - Efforts have been made at the site in order to reduce its environmental impact: waste management, reduction of water and energy consumption, etc.

    - Expanscience is striving to improve occupational safety for its staff. Training and awareness-raising initiatives are being implemented in connection with this theme.

And in addition to initiatives currently under way,  Expanscience has set a number of ambitious targets for the years ahead:

    - The company is committed to reducing its waste production and water and energy consumption by 20% at its production and R&D site in Epernon by 20% between 2010 and 2015, as well as its greenhouse gas emissions between 2008 and 2015 (excluding subsidiaries and sourcing).

    - Between now and 2015, Expanscience is also committed to completing the "quality of life at work" program.

  • Distribution & Communication

Our responsibilities go beyond production. We are also committed to minimizing the environmental impact of distribution: we prepare our orders with as much care as possible so as to avoid returns. We group them together, and we always strive to use the least polluting forms of transport.

We also strive to communicate information in a way that is responsible and sincere:

    - Our website is our main channel for communicating information about our products and our approach.

    - We take the environmental impact that the materials that we use to develop our communications tools into account: for example, we use cardboard from sustainably managed forests and materials that have either been recycled or which can be recycled.

    - We take great pride in ensuring that we communicate information about the ingredients we have selected in complete transparency, together with how our products have been developed, our choices and our initiatives.

    - Our partners (healthcare professionals, students, local authorities, etc.) are regularly invited to visit our manufacturing site.

    - Expanscience works with various scientific expert committees on developing guides so that their expertise can be passed on to their colleagues.

    - Discussions are held on a bi-annual basis with Expanscience's stakeholders (representatives from NGOs, charities, consumer and patient organizations) and experts.

    - In 2009,  Expanscience signed the Responsible Communications Charter developed by the French Advertiser’s Union . Under the terms of this charter, the company is required to communicate with its users transparently and responsibly, and must factor in environmental considerations into its choice of communications media.

  • Use

Our products are designed so that using them is practical and safe for your baby, and to minimize waste:

    - Whenever possible, we use packaging that provides just the right amount of product (pump-action bottles and tubes).

    - Our packaging is designed to ensure that the products contained are kept in optimum conditions, so that you can continue to enjoy them right up until their last drop without compromising quality.

    - For your baby in particular, we have 2-in-1 body wash and hair shampoo products, minimizing the number of products needed in your bathtime routine.

    - We also have large containers, reducing the number of packages used.

  • End of product life

We do what we can to ensure that our products have the lowest possible impact on the environment after their use: for example, all Mustela cardboard containers and all Mustela bottles are recyclable (excluding samples and in accordance with French recyclability criteria), and all of our liquid wash formula are biodegradable (OCDE 302B standard).
Bycorrectly sorting the waste products in your bathroom, you can also play your part in reducing the environmental impact of Mustela’s products: to find out more, see our list of recommendations and tips for sorting bathroom waste products!
